Middle schoolers getting to experience music with JazzArts Charlotte

It’s time to strike up the jazz!  Middle school band students in 亚洲淫蕩人妻 will get to experience the sounds, history, and influence of jazz music when JazzArts Charlotte brings its JazzArts Academy to Belmont Middle School on April 1.

Julian Wilson, the band director at York Chester Middle School, is coordinating the workshop that will involve students from his school, Belmont Middle, and W.C. Friday Middle.  It’s an opportunity for about 100 students to explore the music genre that started in African-American communities in New Orleans in the 1800s.  Jazz is known for its roots in blues, ragtime, spirituals, and other types of music, and since the Jazz Age in the 1920s, jazz has become a significant influence in popular music.

“This is going to introduce students to jazz as an art form and give them exposure to a genre of music outside of what they typically experience in band class where the focus is more on reading music, note values, dynamics, and music literacy,” said Wilson.  “Jazz is about improvisation, bending the notes, and making the music feel good.  With jazz, self-expression is what’s most important.”

Wilson is grateful for the chance to partner with and bring the organization’s educational workshop to Gaston County.  Since 2011, the JazzArts Academy has engaged more than 50,000 students from across the Charlotte region in workshops and hands-on music education.  “They are the pinnacle of jazz performance and jazz education for North Carolina,” added Wilson.

The after-school workshop on April 1 includes an introductory performance by JazzCharlotte; a master class about what jazz is, its history, and what it takes to make jazz music; demonstrations; and breakout sessions focusing on jazz and blues techniques before a culminating jam session at 6:30 p.m.  The event is billed as “Middle School Jazz Night,” and Wilson is excited to see what happens and how his students respond.  His goal is to provide more educational programs like this one to further enhance what students with an interest in band and music get to experience in 亚洲淫蕩人妻.   

Exposing students to music beyond the classroom is something Wilson does with school and community activities throughout the school year.  Not only does he want his students to learn music, he wants them to share what they have learned with others.  That’s why Wilson has his students involved in special events, concerts, parades, and other performances so they can continue to build a sense of community through the arts.
